
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her work in performance skills, political stance and a talent for rhyme. At the age of 8 old an Muslim cousin named her Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah was motivated by her mother who was always in contact with the school and the musicians. Mark James, the local disc jockey was invited by Latifah to sing during the dance.
